Client Statement – Lucy’s Supported Internship

Lucy has written a letter about her experiences interning for Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery. Lucy is part of our Supported Internship programme, and her passion cannot be understated. Below is what she wrote:

Volunteer Voice

 

I am Lucy and I volunteer at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery through a supported internship with Enable.

I am in my final year at Shrewsbury College and as part of my course I  spend 2 days a week on a work placement at the museum.

Since I started work last October I have undertaken various tasks in all areas of the museum and am enjoying my time there immensely.

Mostly I can be found in the different galleries supervising the exhibitions, this involves helping visitors with enquiries about the objects on display and I really enjoy the interaction with the customers.

My knowledge of local history grows daily and I relish the opportunity to share this information during visitor’s discussions.

There are four main galleries: Roman, Medieval, Tudor and Stuart, Shropshire and Special Exhibitions, which are changing all the time with items on loan from other museums.

My personal favourite is Medieval as I find this the most interesting period of history.

Each gallery has interactive activities, I especially like to see the children on school visits dressing up in our costume selection.

In addition to working in the galleries, I have had the opportunity to work at the meet and greet area helping visitors with orientation around the building and other enquiries and have also supported the education team with the production of materials used in education sessions with school visits. For Halloween I was busy making Harry Potter magic wands out of hazel wood sticks.

SM&AG is a great place to work, the management team and all the staff and volunteers have made me very welcome.

I have had the opportunity to help out everywhere and the experience has given me confidence, taught me new skills and I am proud to be part of such a special place.

I would recommend to anyone to come and visit!
