Enable’s Veteran Employment Service team will be attending alongside Interserve to Give a Day of Your Time (GADOYT) at The National Memorial Arboretum – undertaking tasks to benefit the Arboretum and it’s grounds.

The National Memorial Arboretum honours the fallen, recognises service and sacrifice and fosters pride in our country. It is a spiritually uplifting place and is emerging as a world-renowned centre for remembrance.

There are nearly 300 memorials for the armed forces, civilian organisations and voluntary bodies that have played a part in serving the country; and even HMS Amethyst’s cat. Several corporate war memorials from British banks, building societies, and insurance companies have been relocated to the grounds when the original owners became unable or unwilling to care for them. At the heart of the Arboretum is the Armed Forces Memorial, which is a tribute to over 16,000 service personnel who have lost their lives in conflict or as a result of terrorism since the end of the Second World War.

During the period Monday 10th October 2016 – Friday 15th October, 89 Interserve employees contributed a day of their time to The National Memorial Arboretum; almost 490 man hours.  A number of tasks were undertaken: a daily team removed approximately 5 acres of hazel trees in the Royal Army Medical Corps Avenue otherwise known as Victoria Cross Avenue and the refurbishment of many memorial gardens, including The Royal Ulster Constabulary, Rose Garden, Children’s Garden, Burma Star Memorial Garden and cleaning of hedge cuttings from main pathways.  Tasks that made a difference to The National Memorial Arboretum and families during their open day.
