Independent Travel Training

enable travel training

Enable has been working with the Shropshire council’s specialist Transport Team to provide Independent Travel Training (ITT) for students with special educational needs.

A dedicated team is delivering the training which is aimed at young people from Year 7 to Year 13, who are in need of support with using public transport. The objective is to help build the student’s confidence and knowledge – allowing them to become familiar with their route to school or college.

The benefits gained from ITT are immense and include; increased independence and confidence, personal mobility, increased access to educational opportunities and improved life skills.

Travel Trainee Jack said: “I’m really pleased I did the travel training it has made me more confident to use a bus and it has given me the confidence to talk to some new people. It wasn’t as scary as I first thought it was going to be and I feel quite proud of myself for doing it.”

Parents of Travel Trainee, Ellie, said:

“We can’t believe it – from going nowhere by herself, Ellie now goes to college every day by getting two buses each way on her own. Enable supported her every step of the way and made sure she was safe and capable at each stage. Not only has this greatly increased Ellie’s self-confidence, but it has also made us realise she can achieve many more things.”
