Case Study: Matt's return to work

Client Case Study: Employment Specialist Susie & Matt describe his return to work

The Client

Matt shared that he was in recovery, having been on a journey over the last 3 years, experiencing bereavement, mental health difficulties, alcoholism and addiction.

Matt felt very strongly that employment was fundamental in his recovery journey. Matt had been unemployed for the last 3 years, prior to that Matt had worked in warehousing, his last role as a warehouse supervisor. This was an area that Matt wanted to get back into.

Matt identified that having been out of work for so long, that his confidence had taken a real hit.

The Journey

Our next meeting involved attending an appointment with the Enable Advisor at Citizen’s Advice Bureau, to get a Better off in Work Calculation. This was to ensure that Matt would be better off in work and supported to access the right benefits.

Subsequent meetings involved work on Matt’s CV, exploring avenues for gaining references, job searching, exploring training opportunities for upskilling, exploring voluntary options as a stepping stone into employment and interview preparation. We looked at Matt’s strengths and qualities related to the roles that he was applying for, and explored his previous workplace experiences that showcase his skills for the roles. We rehearsed possible interview questions including possible questions around gap in employment and disclosure.

We organised a mock interview with Hannah, one of the Enable team, giving Matt the opportunity to gain feedback and explore any areas for development.

The Outcome

Matt was incredibly proactive in the time between meetings, including signing up to various recruitment agencies. He was then contacted about a temporary role in a warehouse. With only a few hours’ notice, with a 6am start the next day, Matt jumped at the opportunity. We discussed & felt that in-work support would be really beneficial, continuing to meet regularly, talking about work and exploring any difficulties.

Matt has been working at the warehouse now since the end of August 2024 and although the hours and physicality of the role can be tough at times, he is enjoying it.

“Susie has helped me out massively in getting to the point I’m at now and I’m really grateful. My confidence and self esteem had took a hit in the years of my issues and Susie was very supportive and understanding to my circumstances” - Matt
