Client Success Story: Jamie

Supported Internships

Jamie came to the Supported Internships service with Enable in September. He had a strong interest in IT and computing and wanted a placement that would help him to build on his skills. Employment Officer, Brendan, managed to secure a placement for Jamie in the Shropshire Council IT Team. The interview process for the internship consisted of a one-to-one interview followed by a work trial. This really helped Jaimie to show his skills as he was quite shy in the interview. Enable negotiated the work trial as they knew Jaimie had the potential to shine in the work place.

His main task is answering the phone and dealing with any problems that the Council staff have with their computers. Jaimie arrives at work promptly and sorts himself out so he is ready for the day. Whenever there is a quiet point in the day or whenever he completes a task he will always ask for more jobs to do. He has become confident in the environment of the office and has great communication with the rest of the team. The rest of the team are extremely happy with how he is progressing, so much so that his Job Coach has been able to withdraw support as he knows Jaimie is happy and comfortable.

Martine, Jamie’s mother said: “Jaimie’s confidence has doubled since starting the internship. And I’m so grateful Jaimie has been given this opportunity.”

Jaimie said he is “absolutely loving the internship at Shropshire Council”

Dean, Jaimie’s manager, said he is happy with Jaimie’s focus, timekeeping, his problem solving and his overall attitude.

Jamie completed the “college ready” course at Shrewsbury College last year but was not ready for the level 2 IT course.  The supported internship will enable him to gain a wide range of experience in IT and build on his employability skills.  It is hoped that Jaimie will be able to progress on to a traineeship or an inclusive apprenticeship when he completes his internship.
